Lucid and economical, the Concise Introduction delivers a brisk, fast-moving survey. For many years, Powers' nearly six hundred-page Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism has served as the field's most authoritative and comprehensive introductory text on Tibet's distinctive Buddhist tradition. Now Powers has responded to requests to provide an introductory text in compact form. This slimmed-down reference explains the core Buddhist doctrines and the practices of meditation and tantra in an engaging manner. A survey of the four main sects of Tibetan Buddhism and a succinct history of the Tibetan cultural region complete this work.
Praise for Powers' previous book, Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism:

ESTABLISHING APPEARANCES AS DIVINE: Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo on Reasoning, Madhyamaka, and Purity by Heidi Köppl
Pre-order Now!
May, 2008 1559392886, 978-1559392884 152 pages #ESAPDI $29.95 cloth Special Sale! $23.96
Esoteric Tibetan Buddhist scriptures teach practitioners to visualize themselves as deities residing within a mandala. By doing so, they assert, the practitioner will eventually become the deity itself. But are sentient beings intrinsically pure, or does visualization practice and contemplation of the deity qualities make them pure? In this eleventh-century commentary, the renowned Nyingma (Ancient School) scholar Rongzom Chokyi Zangpo sets out his analysis of the nature of purity. This penetrating study, directed towards scholars and serious practitioners, contains Koppl's English-language translation of Rongzom's original text and her explication of his views.
Koppl's incisive analysis offers a description of Rongzom's career and works and gives special attention to his critique of Madhyamaka philosophy, comparing his position to the work of his Nyingma successors. Some of Rongzom's approaches, Koppl shows, are unconventional even in a Nyingma context.
Rongzom Chökyi Zangpo is considered the greatest Nyingma scholar of the eleventh century.
Heidi Köppl is a translator and scholar of Tibetan Buddhist texts associated with the Dharmachakra Translation Committee. She lives in Kathmandu, Nepal. |

VINEGAR INTO HONEY: Seven Steps to Understanding and Transforming Anger, Aggression, and Violence by Ron Leifer, M.D.
Pre-order Now!
May, 2008 1559392932, 978-1559392938 144 pages #VIHOSE $14.95 paper Special Sale! $11.96
Our desires and our fears are woven into a tangled web of conflicts. We want both to eat dessert and to be thin. We want money but don't want to work. Anything that threatens our sense of self and its striving for happiness is perceived as a threat to our very lives—the response to which is defensiveness, anger, aggression, and violence.
Vinegar into Honey proposes a new paradigm for understanding the relationship between stress, anxiety, anger, and depression. Leifer provides detailed instructions for working with anger and other painful emotions. The process of transforming suffering into equanimity and compassion is central in Buddhist psychology and practice. Each of the steps in Vinegar into Honey reflects views and methods drawn from Buddhist tradition. Leifer's work holds promise for psychotherapists and their patients, individuals seeking to understand and work with their anger, and people interested in the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy.
Ron Leifer, M.D., is a psychiatrist with more than forty-five years experience in the practice of private psychotherapy. He trained in psychiatry under Thomas Szasz and became a Buddhist practitioner in 1980 when he became a student of Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche. He founded the Ithaca Dharma Society and teaches meditation. He is the author of In the Name of Mental Health and The Happiness Project and more than fifty articles in professional journals on psychiatry and the interface of Buddhism and psychotherapy. He lives in Ithaca, New York. |

What does it take to be happy? We've all asked ourselves this question at some point, but few of us have found the path to lasting fulfillment.
David Michie thought he had achieved his life's goals—the high-level job, the expensive city apartment, the luxury car, the great vacations—but a small voice was telling him he wasn't really happy. A chance remark from a naturopath sent him to his local Buddhist center. There he began the most important journey of his life.
In this simple but beautifully written book, David Michie opens the door to the core teachings of Tibetan Buddhism. With wry, self-deprecating humor, he shows us how he began to incorporate Buddhist practices into his daily life. He explains how he came to understand the difference between the temporary pleasures of ordinary life and the profound sense of well-being and heartfelt serenity that comes from connecting with our inner nature.
Every once in a while you come across an extraordinary book with the power to change your life. Buddhism for Busy People is one such book.
"Michie demystifies the ancient teachings of Buddha, and writes about them with easy style."—Australia Sunday Mail

THE KARMAPA'S MIDDLE WAY: Feast for the Fortunate by the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje, introduction by Dzogchen Ponlop, translated by Tyler Dewar
Pre-order Now!
June, 2008 1559392894, 978-1559392891 850 pages #KAMIWA $59.95 cloth Special Sale! $47.96
Marked by eloquent poetry, vigorous and extensive analysis, and heart instructions on breaking through the veils of confusion to independently experience the true nature of things, The Karmapa's Middle Way contains the Ninth Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje's comprehensive commentary on the Indian master Chandrakirti's seminal text, the Entrance to the Middle Way. This commentary, A Feast for the Fortunate, is the Ninth Karmapa's abridgement of the Eighth Karmapa Mikyö Dorje's masterpiece, The Chariot of the Takpo Kagyü Siddhas. In it readers will find previously unavailable material on the Karmapas' Middle Way view and a rare window into a philosophically charged era of Middle Way exposition in Tibetan Buddhism.
In this book, Chandrakirti and the Karmapa present in precise detail the essential Buddhist concept of emptiness, through which the Mahayana path of compassionate altruism becomes complete.
"Of all the philosophical traditions that claim to be the Middle Way, it is only the view of Nagarjuna, the Middle Way tradition's progenitor, that is universally accepted as the Middle Way. Chandrakirti's Madhyamakavatara, moreover, is renowned in all four schools of Tibetan Buddhism as the supreme commentary on Nagarjuna's approach to emptiness and is considered mandatory reading in all Tibetan Buddhist colleges. The Karmapa's Middle Way is a presentation of the full text of the Madhyamakavatara along with an illuminating and at times controversial commentary by the Ninth Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje of Tibet's Karma Kagyu lineage. By elucidating the intention of the Eighth Karmapa Mikyo Dorje's Chariot of the Takpo Kagyu Siddhas, this book will provide a great contribution to the field of Middle Way studies and enlighten English language readers as to a unique and relatively unexplored presentation of the vital concept of emptiness."—Dzogchen Ponlop
The Ninth Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje (1556-1603), was a prolific author on a wide range of sutra and tantra topics and is most renowned in the Kagyu tradition for his instructions on Mahamudra.
Tyler Dewar translates for Nalandabodhi Buddhist centers and lives in Seattle, Washington. |

June, 2008 1559392991, 978-1559392998 362 pages, photographs #LISILI $18.95 paper Special Sale! $15.16
Padampa Sangye's influence on the Buddhism of Tibet and China is profound. All four schools of Tibetan Buddhism consider him a seminal teacher. This translation of his biography introduces us to a transcendent, irascible, and iconoclastic figure. Padampa Sangye encouraged his disciples to disregard social conventions, disdain social contacts, and break through their cultural conditioning. Although able to deliver lengthy sermons, Padampa Sangye taught just as often entirely without words, or with cryptic messages similar to Zen koans. His outlandish style and miraculous deeds will captivate readers. The comprehensive presentation of his spiritual career, teachings, and deeds will make it an indispensable reference work for students of Eastern spirituality.
Praise for Molk's previous book, Chod in the Ganden Tradition:
"A fabulous book—uplifting and enlightening.... Molk's many years of study and practice shine through in his retelling of this most amazing Dharma legacy."—Glenn Mullin, author of The Dalai Lamas on Tantra

Mind Beyond Death is an indispensable guidebook through the journey of life and death. Using humorous analogies and his profound understanding of the Western mind, Dzogchen Ponlop makes the mysterious Tibetan teachings on the bardos—the intervals between waking and sleep, between life and death, and beyond—completely available to the modern reader.
Drawing on a breathtaking range of material, this young, popular teacher shows us how the bardos can be used to conquer death. Working with the bardos means taking hold of life and learning how to live with fearless abandon, and Mind Beyond Death demonstrates that the secret to a good journey through death and beyond lies in how we live.
Walking skillfully through the bardos of dream, meditation, and daily life, we then travel deep into the mysterious death intervals and become familiar with their dazzling mindscape. This tour de force gives us the knowledge to transform the greatest obstacle of death into the most powerful opportunity for enlightenment.
"One of the most brilliant Tibetan Buddhist teachers of his generation."—Sogyal Rinpoche
"'The way to meet death fully,' says Ponlop Rinpoche, 'is to die every day, to every moment, to everything...even to our joy.' At forty-one, Ponlop Rinpoche, who makes his home in Seattle, is at the forefront of a new generation of traditionally-trained Tibetan Buddhist scholar-teachers. You're sure to hear more from him in the future."—Shambhala Sun

ARYADEVA'S FOUR HUNDRED STANZAS ON EMPTINESS: With Commentary by Gyel-tsap by Aryadeva and Gyel-tsap, translated by Ruth Sonam, additional commentary by Geshe Sonam Rinchen

July, 2008 1559393025, 978-1559393027 400 pages #ARFOHU $29.95 paper Special Sale! $23.96
Aryadeva's Four Hundred Stanzas is a foundational work of Mahayana Buddhist philosophy, and Gyel-tsap's commentary is arguably one of the most important written about it. There are no other English translations of the Four Hundred Stanzas with this commentary in print.
Mahayana practitioners, Aryadeva says, must eliminate both obstructions to liberation and obstructions to the perfect knowledge of all phenomena. This requires a powerful understanding of selflessness, and an accumulation of merit resulting from the kind of love, compassion, and altruistic intention cultivated by bodhisattvas. The first half of Aryadeva's work focuses on developing merit, and the second explains that all phenomena are empty of intrinsic existence. Gyel-tsap's commentary on Aryadeva's text takes the form of a lively dialogue. Geshe Sonam Rinchen provides additional commentary.
"A fine and readable translation of an important work of Mahayana Buddhist thought. In the hands of Geshe Sonam Rinchen and Ruth Sonam, the Tibetan text translated in these pages truly becomes 'the essence of good explanations.'"—José Ignacio Cabezón, University of California Santa Barbara
Geshe Sonam Rinchen studied at Sera Je Monastery and in 1980 received the Lharampa Geshe degree. He is currently resident scholar at the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives in Dharamsala, India.
Ruth Sonam began studying with Geshe Sonam Rinchen in 1978 and has worked as his interpreter since 1983. |

CHÖD PRACTICE IN THE BON TRADITION by Alejandro Chaoul, foreword by Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche
Pre-order Now!
August, 2008 1559392924, 978-1559392921 118 pages, 12 b&w photographs #CHPRBO $18.95 cloth Special Sale! $15.16
This book is the first to trace the history of Chöd practice in Tibet's indigenous Bön tradition. Chod ("cutting through") is a meditative practice in which the practitioner imagines offering his or her body in sacrifice through elaborate contemplative visualization. Although a meditative practice, Chod is not done sitting comfortably on a cushion in a shrine room, but instead is often practiced in terrifying places like cemeteries or charnal grounds. The feelings of fear that result are used by the Chod practitioner to "cut through" his or her own ego. Chod contains elements of early shamanism, of sutric and tantric teachings also found in Indo-Tibetan Buddhism, and of the Tibetan highest school of Dzogchen.
"In the last few years the interest in chod has suddenly re-emerged, and a few books have been written about it from the Buddhist perspective. Chaoul's work on chod from the Bon's perspective could not be more timely. His thorough analysis of this syncretic and fascinating religious practice and the use of the metaphor of cutting as a way to go beyond assumed boundaries, provides a broader picture of chod and sheds light on the interrelation of Buddhism and Bon."—Giacomella Orofino, University of Naples
Alejandro Chaoul obtained his Ph.D. at Rice University and has also completed the seven-year program at the Ligmincha Institute for the study of the Bon-Buddhist tradition of Tibet. He is currently Assistant Professor at the John McGovern Center for Health, Humanities and the Human Spirit in University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he teaches meditation and yoga to patients. Master of masters, visionary, poet, revealer of profound spiritual treasures, Dudjom Rinpoche was a paramount figure in the history of twentieth-century Tibet. He worked closely with the present Dalai Lama to reinvigorate Tibetan culture and spiritual practice following the Chinese invasion of their homeland. Nyingma masters and devotees, both lay and ordained, unanimously appointed him Supreme Head of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism, and he served in this capacity until his death in 1987. He wrote over two dozen volumes of poetry, music, history, and philosophy. In addition, he assembled and published texts which might otherwise have been lost and delivered unprecedented numbers of initiations and teachings to thousands of individuals.
Written by a Nyingma master who served for several years as Dudjom Rinpoche's secretary, this biography celebrates a teacher whose hardships in exile did not diminish his zest for scholarship and practice. "I, the tiger, do not need a rich mansion," he wrote after leaving Tibet. "The tiger's forest thickets are my rich mansion."

September, 2008 1559393068, 978-1559393065 160 pages #HUME $14.95 paper Special Sale! $11.96
If meditation were available in capsule form, it would be the biggest selling drug of all time. It has been scientifically proven to deliver highly effective stress relief, boost our immune systems, and dramatically slow the aging process. It has also been shown to make us much happier and more effective thinkers. Given all the physical and psychological benefits, why aren't more of us doing it?
In his thought-provoking and entertaining book, David Michie explains the nuts and bolts of meditation. As a busy professional, as well as a long-term meditator, he also gives a first-hand account of how to integrate this transformational practice into everyday life. Combining leading edge science with timeless wisdom, Hurry Up and Meditate provides all the motivation and tools you need to achieve greater balance, better health, and more panoramic perspective on life.
"The idea of infusing our daily schedule with new-found tranquility may sound appealing—but not everyone is temperamentally suited to sitting around in the lotus position chanting 'Om.' Not to mention the fact that some of us just have very active minds. We'd like to meditate—but we're just not capable of switching off.
"Whoa! Back up a little! These are what I call the most common 'buts' of meditation—as in 'I'd like to meditate, but...' And the amazing thing is that it's exactly the people who use the 'too busy,' 'too hard,' and 'too hyper' justifications who stand to gain the most from meditation.
"How can I be so sure of this? Because I was one of them.
"This book has been written for people in a hurry, and its message is quite simple: meditation is probably the best chance you've got to combat stress, cultivate happiness, enhance your performance, realize your goals, and attain mastery of your mental, emotional, and material destiny."—from the Introduction to Hurry Up and Meditate
"Direct, unsentimental and compelling, this is a book for the skeptics, ditherers, and those (many) of us who lapse in our meditative practices. If there is someone in your life you'd like to introduce to meditation, Hurry Up and Meditate is an ideal conversation-starter."—Amanda Sinclair, Melbourne Business School; author, Leadership for the Disillusioned
"This is one of the most accessible and relevant books available on meditation. Hurry up and read it!"--Ian Gawler Oam, author of Peace of Mind and Meditation--Pure and Simple

September, 2008 155939305X, 978-1559393058 448 pages #TRKN83 $34.95 cloth Special Sale! $27.96
Jamgon Kongtrul Lodro Taye's Treasury of Knowledge in ten volumes is a unique encyclopedic masterpiece embodying the entire range of Buddhist teachings as they were presented in Tibet. The Elements of Tantric Practice sets forth the inner system of meditation—that of highest yoga tantra, which comprises two phases. The phase of creation relies primarily on the use of the imagination to effect personal transformation. In the phase of completion, practitioners actually achieve these transformations by the use of powerful inner yogas that manipulate the inner energies and constituents of the mind and body, leading to the realization of the fundamental nature of mind and phenomena. Together these practices constitute, in Kongtrul's words, "a magnificent tradition composed of teachings explicitly set forth in the tantras...cherished by scholars and siddhas of [ancient] India who achieved total realization [by relying] on it."
Jamgön Kongtrul Lodrö Tayé (1813-1900), a pivotal figure in eastern Tibet's nonsectarian movement, was one of the most outstanding writers and teachers of his time. |

IMPERMANENCE: The Time of Man by David Hodge and Hi-Jin Hodge
Pre-order Now!
October, 2008 1559393072, 978-1559393076 144 pages, 108 b&w photographs and DVD #IMEMCH $29.95 cloth Special Sale! $23.96
Impermanence, one of Buddhism's "three marks of existence," expresses the idea that all conditioned existence is in flux. Asked to contribute to a 2005 exhibit celebrating the work of the Dalai Lama, multimedia artists David and Hi-Jin Hodge interviewed over a hundred people about impermanence and change in their lives. Their subjects ranged from philosophers to gardeners, economists to spiritual leaders, doctors to patients. The Hodges promised themselves that they would stop when the interviews started to duplicate each other--but that never happened. Even the shyest people could talk about the topic for a long time; even those who appeared far from contemplative had thought deeply about impermanence. The result was incredibly moving. The Hodges' installation consisted of a large, circular arrangement of mounted iPods on which the interviews played simultaneously, each on its own screen. The San Jose Mercury News called the piece "one of the most popular works in the exhibition."
Now this unique record has been made available for a wider audience; it includes both a book and a DVD so that the interviews can be viewed as they were seen in the original exhibit. The book is more than a beautiful record of the exhibit; it blends art, philosophy, and everyday life to present a kaleidoscope of views on a topic everyone has wrestled with. What does it mean that we are constantly changing? How do people confront ideas like death and change? Though impermanence is a central Buddhist concept, it's also a universal concern. We all grow up, change, and eventually pass into another state. Impermanence: The Time of Man provides a range of voices, both profound and heartwarming, that address these questions.
Although the museum installation was a powerful experience, this book and its accompanying DVD stand alone, a potent exploration of the issue of impermanence in everyday life and how individuals learn to stay open and present in a world of constant change.
David Hodge and Hi-Jin Hodge are filmmakers and artists whose work explores complex human and social questions. They live in Half Moon Bay, California. |

Yantra Yoga is a very rich body of knowledge that includes 4 preliminary series, 75 various asanas, 7 breathing practices, 7 lotuses and the vajra wave--108 aspects in all.
Profusely illustrated with drawings and photographs,Yantra Yoga presents Tibet's trulkhor yoga tradition as taught by one if its master exponents, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu.

LIVING IN THE FACE OF DEATH: The Tibetan Tradition by Glenn H. Mullin

November, 2008 1559393106, 978-1559393102 240 pages #LIFA2E $16.95 paper Special Sale! $13.56
Until recently, contemporary Western society viewed death the way the Victorians viewed sex--as taboo, a forbidden subject. Yet Tibetan tradition incorporates death into everyday life. Over the centuries Tibetans have developed a wide-ranging literature on death, of which The Tibetan Book of the Dead--whose author, Karma Lingpa, has a selection included here--is perhaps the best-known. Eight other short texts include works by the Second, Seventh, and Thirteenth Dalai Lamas, and cover meditation techniques to prepare for death, rituals for preparing the dead, and accounts of what transpires during the bardo (the state of consciousness between death and rebirth).
"The translations of the nine texts sparkle with such clarity that the multi-faceted gems of Tibetan Buddhist belief shine boldly."--Publisher's Weekly
"This study performs the service of presenting the Tibetan understanding of death as a whole--circumambulating it, as we might say, to view it in the round."--Huston Smith
